Common Eye Conditions & Diseases
Keratoconus
The cornea is shaped like a globe, but it can slowly take on a cylindrical shape in some instances. When this occurs, it is called keratoconus.
This condition usually begins to affect people between the ages of 10 and 25, and the symptoms can take years to develop. Symptoms of this disease include distorted vision, sensitivity to bright light, and difficulty wearing contact lenses.
Your optometrist may be able to correct the initial symptoms with specialty contact lenses and eyeglasses. As keratoconus progresses, the patient may require a cornea transplant.
Cataracts
Cataracts are generally part of the aging process, and they occur when your eye’s lens becomes more rigid and opaque over time. As they develop, they cloud your lens, eventually affecting your vision.
Your doctor can prescribe glasses or contact lenses at the beginning to correct vision loss; however, only surgery can remove cataracts.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration
The macula is the center of the retina, and its job is to help us see precise detail in the central part of our vision. For the macula to function correctly, it needs to remain intact. The aging process can cause the macula to deteriorate, resulting in the loss of color vision and the ability to see in sharp detail. When this happens, it is called age-related macular degeneration.
Glaucoma
Routine eye exams are the number one way to diagnose and provide treatment for glaucoma. At this time, we cannot reverse vision damage caused by glaucoma, but the progression of the disease can be slowed if caught in its early stages.
Glaucoma occurs more generally in older age groups, but it can happen at any age. It is a group of diseases that affects your optic nerve over time, sometimes leading to blindness. The effects of glaucoma occur gradually, and many patients don’t experience symptoms until its advanced stages.
