Total Myopia Program
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a common refractive error that affects lots of children. Myopia causes distant objects to appear blurry and our team screens for myopia in each child’s eye exam. We work with you and explore myopia control methods that can help your kids enjoy clear, healthy vision.
We are also thrilled to announce the “Total Myopia” program!
The Total Myopia medical professionals and their dedicated team employ modern technology to assess, care for, and develop tailored treatment strategies for every patient. These comprehensive strategies include:
- Customized eye drops, soft multifocal contacts, and overnight lenses
- A systematic approach with scheduled follow-up appointments to help sustain eye health through consistent medical oversight and management
- Assessments aligned with the individualized treatment plan for each patient
- Thorough training on the proper usage, insertion, and removal of contact lenses
- An ongoing maintenance regimen for effective myopia control, with a focus on achieving lasting results
Your Child’s Vision is Our Top Priority
Myopia is a vision problem that is common among children. It is a refractive error, usually referred to as nearsightedness. This condition causes objects in the distance to appear blurry, while closer objects remain sharp and clear.
At Pacific EyeCare Optometry, we’ve committed ourselves to slowing the progression of myopia and providing high-quality treatment to our youngest patients.

Breaking Down Myopia
Experts have not determined the exact cause of myopia, but it is suggested to be a combination of genetics and individual lifestyles. Myopia elongates your eye over time, affecting how light reaches the retina. This can result in distant objects appearing blurry or out of focus.
Children & Myopia
Our children’s eyes grow quickly throughout their early years. However, children often have a higher risk for myopia, which is common between the ages of 6 and 12.
A younger child who develops myopia has a higher chance of developing high myopia. High myopia can carry an increased risk of vision problems, including cataracts, glaucoma and retinal tears.
Myopia in children can be treated by slowing the rate of progression. At Pacific EyeCare Optometry, we offer personalized methods for controlling this condition.
Myopia Control for Children
Atropine Eye Drops
Atropine drops have proven to be a successful method in slowing myopia progression in children. Although experts have not determined the exact reason behind this success, they have found that a low dose is most effective when the eyes are growing.
Orthokeratology (Ortho-k) Contact Lenses
Children as young as 6 have benefitted from Ortho-K contact lenses for controlling myopia progression. Ortho-K contact lenses are rigid contact lenses worn overnight to help guide the cornea into the ideal shape. This helps light focus on your child’s retina correctly, giving them clear, crips vision throughout the day without glasses or contact lenses.
Peripheral Defocus Contact Lenses
Children with myopia can wear peripheral defocus contact lenses. These are multifocal contact lenses with different rings of peripheral defocus. The center part of the lens clears distance vision, while the rings outside the center blurs the child’s peripheral vision. Blurring peripheral vision is thought to help slow eye growth, therefore limiting myopia.
We Can Help With Myopia
Experts are working hard to slow the progression of myopia in children. Although this condition is lifelong, the goal of treatment is to prevent this condition from worsening. There are safe, effective methods available to your family to help maintain your child’s vision health.
